CURRITUCK COUNTY, N.C. (WAVY) - Currituck
County will now collect recyclable materials at public access points
along the ocean starting on Thursday. Recycling at all
County-owned beach accesses in Corolla will be available starting on
June 2, a news release from Currituck County said. There are 15
beach accesses in this program: Southern Beach Access Restroom Facility;
at the east end of each of the 13 east-west streets in the Whalehead
Subdivision; and at the state-owned beach access on the east side of
Ocean Trail (NC Hwy 12) across from the Currituck Lighthouse. County
officials said new carrels at each of these locations will house two
96-gallon recycling containers (yellow lid) and one 96-gallon general
refuse container (green lid). Materials that can be recycled via
the yellow-lidded collection carts include glass bottles, plastic
bottles, soda cans, juice boxes, plastic water bottles, newspapers,
cardboard, magazines, and books. Plastic bags should not be placed in the recycling containers. The
majority of funding to establish this program was provided by NC DENR,
Division of Pollution Prevention & Environmental Assistance's
Community Reduction Grant 2010 program. County staff applied for and received the grant award for $12,000. For more information on the recycling program, contact Public Works at 232-2504.
